Did you know that A1c’s below 7.5% are associated with an increased mortality rate?

 

After years of striving to keep an A1c at 7% or lower, that once magic number becomes deadly. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) released updated guidelines switching the focus in older, less active adults from tight glycemic control to prevention of hypoglycemia and symptomatic hyperglycemic events. When 12% of Type 2 and 38% of Type 1 diabetic hospice patients living in nursing homes experience hypoglycemia within 180 days of admission, most within the first 20 days, adjustments need to be made to how we care for diabetic hospice patients.
